Antiviral Role of Surface Layer Protein A in Lactobacillus Acidophilus
Principal Investigator: Dr. Bikash Sahay
About this project:
Eco-Friendly Design
In our lab thus far, we have preformed numerous experiments regarding surface layer protein A (SlpA) and have determined that it has antiviral effects within the cell. With this notion in mind, we have begun to test to determine whether SlpA would be able to reduce the inflammation that is associated with viral infection. To effectively determine the relation, we have decided to select murine Norovirus as our virus and will be treating murine dendritic cells with varying concentrations of SlpA to determine the relation.
My responsibilities:
Multilingual Functionality
Regarding this experiment, I have begun collecting myeloid cells by euthanizing mice and flushing the bone with buffer to retrieve the cells. Once the myeloid cells were collected, I began treating them with B-mercaptoethanol to cause the cells to develop into dendritic cells. After this step, I will begin to isolate the cells into various petri dishes and infect the cells with murine Norovirus and SlpA. Afterwards, I will run a RNA and qPCR analysis to determine the results.

Professional Experience
Community Service
In 2022, I began working at Shands Teaching Hospital as a Patient Support Technician. Within this role, I transported patients to the procedure room for their upcoming surgeries and collaborated with medical professionals to deliver the utmost care to each patient.
Aiming to explore my horizons, I have begun a new position as an Eye Technician at North Florida Eye Center, in August. Within this role, I will be interacting with patients 1-on-1 to preform various visual exams to determine their overall visual acuity and health. I am eager to enhance my understanding of the Ophthalmology specialty.
With my steadfast passion for service, I have made an impact in my community by volunteering at Days for Girls Non-profit Organization. Within this organization, I worked alongside fellow volunteers to create and distribute reusable menstrual products to alleviate the feminine product disparity within the Gainesville community and beyond.
Extracurricular Involvements
As a first-generation student, I remain committed to ensuring the success of my peers in the future. With this in mind, I have been involved with the First-Generation Leadership Program for the past four years, as a member, mentor, and Service Director. I have thoroughly enjoyed making a direct impact on these students and providing the resources and support as they tackle the challenges of college.
